ALASKA!!

WE'RE IN ALASKA!! We crossed the border back into the US from the Yukon yesterday afternoon, with no problem at all at the border. The horrendous road we'd heard about from Destruction Bay to the border was not as bad as we were expecting--there were many rough patches, but they were marked, and some of the road was OK in between. Since Ernie learned to drive on country dirt and gravel roads and has no problem driving slowly, he had no trouble slowing down and maneuvering through the rough places. It was a long day and not easy driving but not as treacherous as we had been led to believe; we stopped often for photo ops and a picnic lunch in Beaver Creek, the western-most town in Canada. We had stopped at a little bakery between towns run by a French-Canadian couple . . . she had baked all the products that morning! We bought a sandwich on a fresh baquette for our picnic lunch--yum!!

We're now in Tok, Alaska, where we spent the night. My first meal in Alaska last night was red Alaskan salmon from Copper Creek--delicious!! Tok is about four hours from Fairbanks, and we just decided to spend another day here, resting and doing laundry, maybe even uploading some pictures, before trucking on to Fairbanks tomorrow.
